There are steps you can take to be better informed and better protected

• Fit window locks – most burglars get in through the window. Locks make it harder for them as the noise of a breaking window might attract attention.
• Don't leave valuable items in your car where they can be seen – you're tempting a thief to break in.
• Consider taking personal safety classes. Some simple hints can help you to keep safe.
• If you think someone's acting suspiciously, don't hesitate to report it. Call the police or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
• Join your Neighbourhood Watch scheme. If there isn't one in your area, your local police station can tell you how to set up a new group.
• By putting a locking gate at the entrance to your alley (alley gating), you can reduce the chance of burglars accessing the back of your property.

If you are going on a night out and plan to drink alcohol, here are a few top-tips to help keep you safe:

• Alternate alcohol with water or a soft drink to help keep yourself hydrated
• Take a licensed taxi firm’s number with you so you can get home safely
• If you go out with your friends, stay together and make sure you all get home safely
• Eat some food before you go out
• If things get romantic – remember no condom, no sex!

Free fire safety checks

Do you know an elderly or vulnerable person who you feel might be at risk of fire in their home? Then please help them to contact the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to arrange for a free home safety visit.

Prevention is the main aim of the fire service, so crews are visiting homes to offer safety advice and fit free smoke alarms.

The Home Safety Visit scheme is totally free. The local fire crew will phone first to arrange a convenient time – either weekday, evening or weekend. They will then call round, check for any potential fire hazards, offer clear and straightforward fire safety advice, and fit smoke alarms. The visit should only take about 30 minutes.

How to arrange a safety check

To arrange a visit for yourself or on behalf of a friend or relative either call free on 0800 177 7069 or visit the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service website and follow the home safety visits link to book online.
