16 Days of Action

The 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women run from 25th November 2016 (the UN International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women) to the 10th December 2016 (Human Rights Day).

Over 16 days, a range of agencies, groups and individuals are coming together to work to end all forms of violence against women. This includes awareness raising and making sure people know where to go for help and support.

The 16 Days of Action also include other significant dates like World Aids Day (1st December 2016), as well as the White Ribbon Campaign, which calls on men to make a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence and abuse.

What's on in 2016?

Eastbourne White Ribbon Information stand

A multi-agency stand (including partners from Sussex Police, Eastbourne Homes, SCDA, ESF&RS and Eastbourne Borough Council) to raise awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign and wider issues around domestic abuse, including information on how to report and the services available. 

When: Friday 25th November 11.00am-2.00pm

Where: Arndale Centre, Eastbourne

Cost: Free

 

Lewes District Council 16 days Tweet campaign

Lewes District Council will be tweeting key messages during the 16 days of action.

When: Friday 25th November- Saturday 10th December

Hastings White Ribbon Day Event

These stalls will be hosted by a variety of organisations including, but not restricted to: HBC staff, Hastings Youth Council, ESFRS, Sussex Police, Women’s Voice, Refuge, Victim Support, Health Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (HIDVA), Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance (HRRA).

On these stalls, there will be a variety of information regarding domestic violence awareness, as well as local figures, and information on a number of ways for recognising and reporting domestic abuse.

On the night of the 25th November, the Seafront Lighting will be turned white to tie in with White Ribbon Day. Hastings Borough Council will be tweeting over the 16 days of action.

12.00pm Public pledge/speeches- Outside Costa/Café Nero in Hastings town centre

Where: Locations in Hastings include the main stand in the town centre/Priory Meadow. The other four sites are the Conquest Hospital, Broomgrove, the Bridge, and Kings Road area (St Leonards- on-Sea).

Rother District Council Controlling and Coercive behaviour briefings

Rother District Council will be hosting briefing sessions for staff from agencies across Rother focusing on raising awareness of controlling and coercive behaviour.

When: Friday 25th November. 12.30pm-2.00pm

Where: Bexhill Town Hall.

Cost: Invitation to partner agencies.

Wealden District Council: Signing a pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence and abuse

Elected Members and Officers of Wealden District Council will be invited to sign a pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence and abuse. 

The pledge is on large posters, which when completed will be displayed around the offices to remind staff and visitors about this important topic.  This event is also to celebrate the Council being awarded White Ribbon Status.

On 30th November 2016 delegates attending the Annual Wealden Parish Conference will also be invited to sign a similar pledge.  This event will also take place at Hailsham Civic Community Hall.

When: Wednesday 23rd November to Friday 25th November 2016.

Where: Hailsham Civic Community Hall and Wealden District Council Offices, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham.

Conquest Hospital Prevention, Assistance and Signposting

As part of a multi-site campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse the Conquest Hopsital are hosting a White Ribbon stand in the hospital. This will be staffed by the Health Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA), ESHT DASM & Support Nurse.

When: Friday 25th November 11.00am-2.00pm

Where: Conquest Hospital, Hastings  

Cost: Free

 

Charity Chuckle: Stand Up to End Violence against Women

Charity Chuckle returns for its sixth #16days event with a stellar line up of some of the UK’s finest comics, including 2013 Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Bridget Christie, Julie Jepson, Jo Neary, Sajeela Kershi, Athena Kugblenu, Laura Lexx, Harriet Braine (2016 Funny Women winner) and MC Jen Brister. Profits will be split between Sussex charities, Rise and Survivors Network. Book early!

When: Wednesday 7th December, Show start 8.00pm, doors open at 7.00pm.
