Preventing violent extremism

If someone you know is expressing extreme views or hatred, you can share your concerns. Reporting concerns will keep them and others safe.

Support from Prevent

Prevent is part of the UK counter-terrorism strategy. It works to spot people at risk and guide them away from danger. It provides practical support to meet their needs, like a mentor or counselling.

Getting support from Prevent is not a punishment and it won’t go on a person’s criminal record.

How to report concerns

If you have concerns about someone you know, contact the Act Early advice line. You will speak to a trained officer. All calls are confidential.

If there is an immediate threat to life, phone 999.

There is guidance for professionals at Refer to Prevent. But, anyone can make a Prevent referral. For advice, email channel@eastsussex.gov.uk .

Stop terrorists and extremists online

People with extreme views often target young or vulnerable people online.

You can report online material promoting terrorism or extremism.

This includes:

  • articles, images, speeches or videos that promote terrorism
  • content encouraging people to commit terrorist acts
  • websites made by terrorist or extremist groups
  • videos of terrorist attacks

How to Make a Prevent Duty Complaint

You can report issues with how the Prevent duty has been applied to the Office of the Independent Prevent Commissioner (OIPC). It is independent from Prevent and can take complaints about things like:

  • Prevent training you received

  • An organisation not meeting its Prevent duty

  • Prevent being delivered in the wrong way

  • Incorrect or missed Prevent referrals

Anyone can report a concern, please visit Report a concern about Prevent - GOV.UK
